Maia’s kindly royal tutor, a lady of the fabled House of Gold.
She is cousin to Aelssa Etienne of the Golden Isles.
Miss Solait is a loving and gentle teacher to the children, and her lessons take on a dreamlike quality, as though an angel perhaps walked amongst the class.
Her husband died in the Encroaching, while her grandfather was killed in the Battle of Red and Gold that saw power shift to the Ruby House.
Miss Solait carries an air of gentle melancholy with her that only adds to her beauty.
‘Miss Solait?’ he asked in a surprised tone. ‘I had not realised, but, forgive me, are you not the daughter of Lord and Lady Arraigne from the Golden Isles?’
‘I remember your visits to the Port of Ellessa, many years ago, Duke Swanne,’ she said somewhat self-consciously.
‘I knew your parents very well,’ replied the duke. ‘The queen had mentioned that a lady of the Golden Isles was tutoring the children, but – you, then you must be Laureli? My apologies, you were no more than a child when I last saw you. I had not realised.’
‘Solait is my husband’s name,’ she replied softly, and a look of sorrow fell briefly across her face. ‘Antoine Solait; he was an officer in the Queen’s Guard.
‘He was lost two years ago at the battle for Moon’s Leap.’ She spoke the words as though they were being drawn from her against her volition.
