A raiding party had found its way through one of the treacherous mountain passes to the west of Moon's Leap, and had quickly overrun the local outpost.
A force of the Red Guard from the garrison at Moon's Leap was sent to push back the invaders, but they underestimated their numbers and were forced to retreat into the cover of the forested area known as Silk Woods.

Reinforcements were called for, and it was fortunate that a contingent of the elite Royal Guard were nearby at the Tower of the Moon, aboard the airship, the Thundercloud.

A bloody battle ensued, and the invaders were driven from Silk Woods, fleeing back to the northern passes, harried all the way by the Queen's flagship.
During the battle, the Queen's Master of the Royal Guard, Duke Ferdinand Swanne, was badly injured by a helioray shot to the leg. He recovered, but would walk with a limp from his wound for the rest of his days.
